The main or engine shaft at Beckwiths.

The capping on the engine shaft was the product following the  collapse of the shaft lining several years ago. The inspection chamber access is nearest the engine house.

The bricked up archway is actually the opening for the cast iron bob that drove the pump rods. As the spoils were hauled out of the shaft, the waste was tipped around the collar and the shaft walls built up in stages. The shaft top is now some twenty feet above it's original height.
