Since the mines closed, this part of the shaft had filled with some very large boulders weighing up to a ton along with many others that had been thrown down over the years. A project to completely clear and re-timber the shaft took three years to complete. The three stull piece's above the ladder are to hold the large piece of the hanging wall in place. A piece of similar size had to be removed as the shaft was cleared.
