After the wedges had been removed, the center pin and 'fend off' coupling were lifted away from the lower section of rod. 

The fish plate at the bottom of the picture was one of many used to hold the sections of pump rod together. Each was twelve feet in length and one inch thick. It would take three men to move one. 

The thick mud and tangled mess of metal made the job very difficult and great care had to be taken as it was unsure what lay below the collapse although the shaft had run in to adit level.

After disassembly, all the components were hoisted to surface and the mechanism was catalogued.
