Mike 'Dobby' Dobson at breakthrough. With a suitable size window in the hillside, excavation further to the left could be carried out to try and pick up the tunnel again. It was at this point that it became apparent that the tunnel beyond had vanished. The remains of the arched roof could be followed for a few meters but soon dissolved to nothing. Before the tunnel can be cleared to floor level, the arch will have to be reformed to prevent the upper slope pushing the walls in. It is hoped that the project will be completed and the loco running by summer 2001. |
