In the unlikely event of any part of the rod linkage breaking, the cable, which runs the entire length of the viaduct, will prevent the rods from parting and doing damage to the wheel or rocker. Heavy maintenance such as spoke replacement on the great wheel is carried out by Ramsey Shipyard.
