Paul Cairns and Andy Elliott embark on the 600 ft long walk to find the shaft. It was decided to take breathing air into the mine in the event of an oxygen deficiency. It is uncertain if the shaft was found as the route was thick with gluttonous ochre coloured mud in which eventually the lads had to crawl flat out near to the roof for the last few meters. No sounds were heard in any direction and both teams returned to surface. |It was decided that the mud inboard of the shaft would be too deep in view of the condition found in the level. |
